Taking Others Out Before You Go

Brian Worley

Seems lately that every few days we read of another story where a person in despair decides to take the lives of others (often family members) before ultimately killing themselves. A few brief thoughts here about the latest craze of “taking others out before you go.”

In our day, it is easy to see the discomfort of people that suddenly find themselves in what appears to them to be a hopeless situation. Yes, money is important to our lifestyles but it seems from afar that some have bought into a warped conception of the hierarchal importance of money in our lives. Although I don’t believe in the Bible, I must admit that it’s verse stating that “the love of money is the root of evil” seems most relevant to the discussion.

If this is indeed true, then the flip side of this would seem to be that within the love of humanity lie the seeds of personal contentment.  If one finds themselves to be in financial straits, it is a good time to examine how money or the lack thereof changes our feelings about happiness. Some things in life should be untouchable by the swing of the financial pendulum.

The “Great Depression” of history is easier understood now that we are in turbulent times. Tough times come and go, but a depression should not lead one to despair! In retrospect, many were not content when times were considered prosperous. Getting off the treadmill of consumerism and the pacification of attaining trinkets unclutters our lives just enough to give birth to the hope of catching a glimpse of the building blocks of the ultimate meaning of life.

Taking someone else out as you go is a horrible final expression of someone that missed out upon “living” the life that they once had. What a waste! In similar fashion, so is the way of those who by greed, fraud, and deception beguiled others to stockpile their collection of trinkets! One’s final moments in life should be spent in the presence of loved ones rather than selfishly trying to take them with you when you decide it's time to go!
